16v GTI Gear linkage problems
« on: 11 April 2012, 23:55 »
Hi Peeps,

This is probably a question you get asked on here a lot and I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Just bought the car, my first mk2. I can get all gears with relative ease, no grinding, banging etc. Sometimes you need to wait for first or double de-clutch but its not too bad.

However the lnkage is very vague (a bit like mixing a bag of golf balls up with a stick) and there seems to be little  gate left between 1st and reverse.

There seems to be three main fixes which people tend to do; Linkage rebuild with the new bushes etc. replacing the ball on the bottom of the shaft and fitting the weighted linkage arm from the MK3.
Can you tell me what issues these fixes solve and which would help my car?

Cheers in advance

Welcome to the Mk2 section
Follow the guide in the above, refurb kits are available from Heritage VW, GSF etc
One part that didn't come with kit, was this part of the linkage below, not only does the plastic ball disintegrate, the shaft itself suffers from wear, iircc, I paid £30+ for this genuine VW part, when fitted it took out the play that was still evident, after the refurb kit was fitted, and well worth the extra £s

The genuine article

And what you might expect to see when you strip yours down! together with the cheap copy replacement part...

Cheers for the replies guys,

just ordered the kits from GSF, as the cars off the road at the mo Im gonna strip the linkage down this weekend (in between fitting the flooring in the lounge ) and have a look at the relay shaft etc.
Then if needed ill give VW a call and get a shaft.

Thanks for the link to the DIY guide aswell

Gonna have a ring round a couple of scrappys tomorrow for a weighted shift rod.
