vintage shots
« on: 10 April 2012, 06:20 »
Over the Easter weekend I visited family and on friday we went to the Great Central Railway for a special Easter event.
Obviously there were a few steam trains, but also a few other things, traction engines and stuff.
Given the subject matter I shot a lot in B&W.

Here's a selection:

Do you (and why if you do) shoot in B+W on camera?

I do sometimes, if I know it's something I want in B&W. Other times I convert later when I see it on the laptop and think it'll work as B&W.

I often shoot in B&W in camera because I then get instant feedback on how it looks, but also I like the B&W preset on my camera, often prefering that to a conversion done in ACR or PS.

I have a roll of B&W film, which I'm just waiting for the right moment to pop in my film SLR to try out.

I use b/w all the time especially for pictures of the kids and my niece, i just think it adds so much atmosphere to a photograph.

RAW FTW

If you set your camera to B/W then the jpeg preview / image will be B/W but then you can tweak the conversion in PP (channel mixing).

Most cameras will allow allow you to convert to B/W, sepia or cyanotype in camera giving you a preview if you're shooting in colour.  JPEG shooters should shoot in colour and then convert as you can't get the colour information back.
