Poor Stage 2 improvement MK5 Golf GTI - question!
« on: 09 April 2012, 18:07 »
Hi All,

I had a stage 1 remap and my downpipe recently split, so I decided to purchase a 3" downpipe inc 100cell Cat.  This is currently mated to the standard cat back system.  I took the car to AmD to be remapped to stage 2.

On the dyno my stage 1 (with downpipe fitted) came in at a peak of 246 bhp.  After stage 2 remap the best peak figure I got was 253 bhp (Albeit, the top end range had gained 10-15 hp from 4k onwards).  This seems very low to me (only 7bhp for the downpipe and sports cat!), the only error that came up on VAGCOM was p1531 - camshaft timing adjustment OPEN CIRCUIT.

The tuner said that stage 2 usually sees around 270 bhp peak on their rollers, and that the reason its so low its probably because I dont have the cat back fitted and have that faulty sensor.

My understanding was that the cat back has no real bearing on performance, and is more for noise and you get all of the gain from the downpipe/sports cat? I also cant see that sensor playing too much of an issue either, considering the stage 1 figures.

Any suggestions what to check, as its not quite what I was expecting? I cant see the cat back exhaust adding 20 hp!  I have the revision d diverter installed also.

Many thanks!

Hi mate

Sounds a bit iffy to me, I wud suggest speaking to R-Tech....explain what AMD said and ask them if they cud possible help, AMD have had some bad feedback but R-Tech seem to get rave reviews...

Sorry I can't be anymore helpful

Hi mate,

Thanks for reply.. my stage 1 was actually done at r-tech.. I did consider them for stage 2, but my emails were not answered and they never answered the phone for me to book (tried over 3 days - I know they are always very busy guys, but I cant wait around forever!).  I also wasn't best pleased by the 'customer' experience there for my stage 1 last year, and I wrote them an email offering feedback but got no reply.

So I thought id give AmD a go for stage 2.. especially as I follow the btcc.

The graph is actually a lot smoother and linear on AmDs map - but the power gain wasn't as large as expected, and their reasoning for this seemed a bit of a copout.

I was wondering if there were common parts that would hold back power.  Could a faulty PCV maybe cause this sort of problem?

R-Tech have had problems with their phone line and are waiting on BT to get it sorted out.

As for e-mails, there extremely busy and there isn't many of them so sometimes they do get missed. The trick is to keep hassling them

As for dyno graphs looking smooth, anybody can "smooth" a dyno graph

Yer our BT lines have been playing up causing broadband and phone issues, they should all be fixed now. I wrote them an email offering feedback but got no reply  All feedback we get via email gets added to the website or linked to a forum page?  When did you post in your feedback and how? via the feeback page on our website? I will have a look for it and try and post it up, If it was sent via the website I could well be still on the webhosts server.

As for your car not making power the first thing you should look at is your fault codes the only error that came up on VAGCOM was p1531 - camshaft timing adjustment OPEN CIRCUIT.  What did your dyno logs show? was the ecu requesting the load/boost but the engine was not matching it?   If you can get copy of your logs from the dyno mapping session then this will shed some light on thr matter and help your save money tyring to find the lost power.

Stage 2 mapping will give around 250-265bhp, A lot less with a stock induction kit, stock cat back ect..  To get good peak numbers from stage2 you need to get the air and gasses flowing in and out as quick as you can and MUST be running super unleaded all the time like V-power.

Hi Nick,

I either sent it to the email address info@r-techpower.co.uk or from your online form - I cant remember now.  It was the day after it was remapped.. this was quite some time ago now! Its a shame that I could not get through to speak to you regarding stage 2.

All I was given by AmD was the RR graph and print out of the fault code.  Are the logs something that I can request from them retrospectively? I can upload the graph if it would be helpful?

Strange about the feedback as its the feedback we use to advertise?  pm me your email address and I will try to dig it out, out online system got spammed and we lost 100s of emails at the end of the summer.

They should keep logs if the tuned it on there dyno, drop AMD an email to see if they saved them.
