Ok mate thanks
I was looking at the ball heads but after reading that article it put me off them a tiny bit.I wont be doing any macro shots that i can envisage so i will go with the ball.

there's nothing wrong with ball heads, but make sure you get one that's rated to a high enough weight other wise it will slip / sag.

This seems to be a popular make?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Manfrotto-785B-Tripod-MINT-condition-head-/170829096656?pt=UK_Tripods_Monopods&hash=item27c63526d0#ht_500wt_1156

Manfrotto are probably the biggest brand when it comes to camera and lighting support.  I've never head of the 785B model, looking at the description, 1Kg maximum weight it's one aimed at compact cameras.

You probably don't want anything less than 4Kg as remember this is the body, and the lens combined
