My freind recently bought a MK4 1.8 turbo and all was fine for a month or 2, then it started playing up a little. Now when she starts it sometimes the EPC light illuminates and some times it doesn't but as soon as you goes to drive the car when u first start it , it seems to lack all power and holds back and you need to put the cluth in and try to rev it to get it to move. It also seems underpowered to me(i've had a MK4 turbo before) thru out the revs and seems like the turbo is doing nothing. I think my 8v Mk3 GTi is faster.

Also noticed after 30 mins of driving that there was a triangle with a circle round it lit up, on the right hand clock.

Just thought i'd ask if anybody knows what it could be as she hasn't got garage money to spend on it.

Thanks

how can you say thats turbo failure?! it could be a number of things. As previous comments say, get it scanned.

Didn't think it was going to be the turbo.

Going on a scanner later in the week..

Right, its been on a scanner and she has given me a list of codes it came up with.....5 in total.

17705
17511
16706
16395
16486

Just as a test, i removed the plug on the air flow sensor just after the air filter and the car seemed to pull as it should. Don't know if this has anything to do with it but when my MK3 gti was running like a turd, it was the air flow sensor that caused it.

17705 boost leak maybe

Fault code - 16706 Engine Speed Sensor

16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) signal too low

try clearing the codes take it a run see if any pop back up

Maf failure sometimes results in the traction lights flashing on by the way. I'd say it's likely your Maf has had it.
