MK2 Coolant Leak

Hi all

I've recently discovered a coolant leak on the motor which has got drastically worse over the past week, tothe point where i'm topping the system up prior to every journey. 

I've got a mk2 1990 1.6 driver, EZ engine code.

Found this useful diagram and i've put a red box around the where the leak area - it appears to drip from the junction between the two components here - knowing that water can track i've had a good feel around the area and this would definately appear to be the source.  I haven't jacked the car up or started taking it apart yet as I use it for work.



I'm hoping that someone can confirm my suspicion that its simply a gasket between the two parts but if not then don't hold back!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Water pump. So could be the pump itself is leaking out of the main seal between the two halves, or it could just be the elbow seal from below the thermostat.

could be waterpump or the plastic housing for the termostate may be the o ring or pump gasket.... :wink: :smiley:

Thanks for the responses Guys.

I've bought a whole new waterpump as the fella at GSF (I know they're not that good) didn't have the gasket in stock.  VW Leeds can get my a gasket only for next Thursday which is about 7quid. 

Now the dilemma lies in keeping the old waterpump which has done 120k and simply replacing the gasket or replace the pump altogether with an equivalent which I know won't last half as long as the original one installed.

Water pump seal should be a rubber o-ring.

If you are taking the old one off, you should  replace it with the new pump and new ring.

Jobs done then.

You'll probably find the old one has a plastic impeller, and the new one metal.  That's why it should be replaced, as the plastic ones break.

If your talking about removing the waterpump and replacing the gasket its fairly pointless doing just that due to the amount of work involved. You should replace the pump itself along with cambelt and cambelt tensioner. Pump is £35, belt kit is £35 then just some g12 coolant on top

Gents, you've swayed it.  Fit new pump, accompanying o-rings and thermostat (good thinking glove) followed by a good wash and polish. 

A much better way to spend the easter weekend than hunting for easter eggs, the missus isn't gona like me too much tho.  :smiley:
