Springs, Eibach vs H&R?
« on: 02 April 2012, 17:24 »
Hi Folks

First off, apologies, sure this has been asked, but could not find my question specifically

Recently fitted a set of H&R to my GTI. Trouble is I find the drop a bit much, and bit uneven. Rear gap is about 2cm, front is about 1. Don't like the look. I'd like to have something a bit more even. I'n not sure if H&R have different version for DSG and non-DSG or not, but I know EIbach does so was wondering if the local H&R dealer might have put in the wrong springs. Front is too low frankly.

So was looking at some Eibachs. Trouble is local Eibach say the Pro-kit (E10-85-022-02-22 for DSG) is the same drop as standard GTI, and is meant for the "lower spec mk6s", and as they had so many complaints, they don't stock them. They only stock the Sportline kit (20-85-014-02-22 for DSG) which has a 2cm drop on the standard GTi height (5cm for lowest spec mk6s). But looking at the photos of the later kit, it looks about the same drop as the H&R, so would not work. Net photos of the E10-85-022-02-22 looks about right, and still lower than stock. What gives?

Only other alternative is the Eibach sports spring available from the dealers themselves, but I don't know how it compares the the other Eibach options, as I find much reference to the 'OEM' lowering option.

I'm running Volkswagen Racing springs - http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/472530_10150757060096285_684726284_11712520_1555544861_o.jpg I believe they're the same as KW/Weitecs if you can find them. Otherwise, if you are really fussy around the ride height, coilovers might be your best option. I would recommend KW v1's or Weitecs.

I have the H&R kit 28988. Is yours different. Drop looks fine and even to me with this kit. I have DSG.

If I remember correctly the stock GTI suspension actually has the front dropped just a tad lower then the rear. I've seen the numbers between the GTI and the GTD when I was comparing them before buying. They had the same clearance at the rear but the GTI was a tad lower in the front.

I think it's better for the front to be marginally lower then the rear or it may look rear heavy if you have any luggage or passengers. Maybe the difference of a full tank vs an empty tank is enough to see the difference?

Anyway here's a pic of my GTI with the H&R:

Yeah, yours looks far more even, looks great! Mine is visibly lower at the front. Will take a pic and read the parts no off the springs...

ideally the front should be lower than the rear. if the rear is too low you take weight away from the front end and it will understeer more

the eibach website says DSG springs E20-85-014-02-22. i think this is the wrong ay round as it says axle weight 1030kg

E20-85-014-01-22 is for axle weight 1040kg. the manual car is lighter than DSG so don't know whats going on there.

**edit it state 1130kg axle weight not 1030kg so that looks right
