Cylinder 3 or 2, which is witch?

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and car maintenance in general but I'm learning fast  . I have owned a 1999 1.8 gti for the last 4 years.
I filled up with petrol on Wednesday drove 500 yards, stopped at the traffic lights and then the car turned into a tractor!
I have read alot on this forum regarding missfires (thanks to everyone who has contributed in the past!) So far I have tried:
Disconecting MAF. No change.
Disconecting each coil in turn to find which cylider is missfiring. Engine runs smoother with the same cylinder disconnected. Identified the cylinder.
Swapped spark plugs around. No joy, same cylinder effected.
Switched the ignition coils (long black things attatched to the spark plug) around. No joy, same cylinder effected.

So here are my questions:
1.From the front of the car looking at the engine do the cylinders run from left to right or right to left? 1234 or 4321?
Working from the air box and MAF (right side) it is the third cylinder along effected. 4321.

2. Can I switch my coils around to find out if it's my coil pack thats at fault?

If indeed it is my 3rd cylinder missfiring then I will try changing my ignition amp, which just happens to be rattling around the engine bay not attatched to the airbaox.

Next change spark plugs and fuel filter.
Then clean the injectors.

There's alot of engine movement when idoling and it judders around 1000 to 2000 rpm. there is a popping coming from the end of the exhaust.

Sorry is this a question or advice? I still neeed to know which is cylinder 3.

I've just ordered a USB VAG-COM 409.1 OBD 2 II CABLE LEAD so I don't think I'm going to do anything else until I get some error reports. I know that the most likely causes of the missfire will not show up on Vag-Com but it worth a go

Think it's 1-2-3-4 as you look at it from front of car

Number 1 cylinder will be closet to the cambelt, so as your looking from the front it will be to your left.

I had same problem was the coil pack that had done.

Thanks all  that saved me buying a ignition amp for nothing 
So I think it's my cylinder 2 thats miss firing. Is there any way to check before I go out and buy a coil pack?
