Help removing radiator from mk2 GTI?
« on: 01 April 2012, 19:56 »
Hi guys, I need to replace my radiator fan and the radiator itself, (the fan cowling is fine) so i thought i would get the whole thing out as a unit. However after having a quick look before it got dark it looks difficult, as in the whole front end has to come off to get it out.

Can anyone give me any advice or point me to a guide on how to get the radiator in and out as i have tommorow off and want to get it done before the weather takes a turn for the worse. I have searched all over the internet and no help :/

Any help much apreciated, Jake.

It's easy bud, this was my first ever car job, is the rad leaking, if so check the stat or whatever it is in the bottom right corner as you look at it, i bought a new rad, but it was this that leaking!

From memory, drain it down, unplug all the plugs, then on top there are two brackets, undo these bolts. mine snapped on one of them so be careful, no biggy if they do snap though just a trip to b&q, then take off hoses, then pull it out. Pretty sure thats all that is invlolved.

You need Weellies and a bucket.....

Rest is just a few bolts...

4 bolts for the rad fan, and 2 bolts for the rad once you've taken off the pipes.... Get hold of a Haynes if you find it too hard...

Dead Easy....

You don't need to take off the slam panel...
