hi all, im new and have a few questions
« on: 30 May 2005, 20:41 »
i have just purchased my olds mans golf mk2 8v gti from him, whihc we are doing up for thr track. really wanted a small pug or something but he wanted rid so though id help him out. Anyways  we stripped the car today and its ready for the engine and exhausts to be played with just a little as the cars more for a bit of fun that being no1 track driver. I have noticed that it idles at under 1k and then bounes up to over 2 and it did this for quite some time, ive also noticed that the clutch is winy when pressed in and doesnt allways like the gears. im just asking for your guys advice on these issues as the car was mint 14 months ago when used but its been stood since and nothing has been done with it and now these problems are here. Normally i woud say the clutch is dead but it was fine when last used so though it might be something else.

one more question, do you know if it is possible to buy an adaptor for the air intake sensor to fit a performance air filter without having to buy a branded overpriced kit as i have massive stocks of filters.

thanks for your time.

welcome to the forum

Does you airbox have hoses coming out of the top of it?

for the revs....check for broken vacume hoses, give the ISV a clean out with some WD40, replace the rubber gromet if missing/broken thats seals the oil breather to the rocker cover

Does it 'whine' all the time? Clutch bearing maybe????

it has two wires coming out of the side one fastens into the bottom of the air box into a small round unit which looks to open a valve, i guessed its the choke unit and the other sucks air and goes behinf the engine.

the wining is only when the clutch is in, i left the handbrake on and reved the engine letting the clutch out totally and the car went to move but not as much as it though it would, but the clutch smoked like hell so it seems to be working.

Uneven idle might be the idle switch, with the engine off you should hear it click when the throttle is closed.  For reasons best known to themselves VW decided the best place for it would be underneath the throttle body, held on with 2 screws which are impossible to reach!

Only way I managed to get to it was to remove the top half of the airbox and inlet hose, and even then I wasn't able to loosen the screws so as to adjust the position of the switch. So I got medieval and tapped it with a hammer a few times untill it clicked when the throttle was closed

Now my idle is all nice & steady :)
