8v's aint worth it then mate. for 1200 less you can save that money do mods

Seen some 1.6 and 1.8 drivers keep up with GTi's. The Gti is just injection version of the 1.8 and better spec like seats to supension if you think about it

slammedmk2 gave me a good run for my money in a 1.6 :D wasnt a huge deal in it although fielders 1.6 wasnt upto it but ill put that to experience on slammeds behalf :D

My first car was a Mk2 1.8 GL, aged 20 with zero no claims, it cost me about £1200 to insure with Norwich Union (through Endsleigh).
The 1.8 GL is a fine car with a decent engine. I once raced my mate who had the same engine in his Rocco Scala, and he beat me, probably cos of being slightly more aero dynamic, although that was only really effective over 50Mph.

When you do your quotes, try the usual tricks:
* add parents as additional drivers (especially if they are over 50 with many years experience) even if they wont drive the car
* insure it at a good/safe address (Elephant will let you insure it at a home address so long as you tell them where you keep it overnight)
* see what difference having an alarm/immobiliser will have on the premiums

Have you tried the specialist insurers? Ones that either specialise in GTIs/VW or ones for young drivers?
Try Adrian Flux and Brentacre.

Overall, I'd say buy yourself a decent Mk2 driver, don't pay over the odds, keep it in good running order, save your money, then when you can afford the insurance sell the Driver, and buy a GTI.

Thanks for the tips   I'm almost settled on a 1.8 driver/gl however I keep getting sidetracked by sciroccos and caddys

I know it's off-topic but does anyone know what is special about a Scirocco Scala, because playing around with quotes it seems quite hard to get a quote for myself on a scala, however a regular GT or GT2 is ok?

Going from what my friends Scirocco Scala was like, it just has a coloured body kit (skirts and bumpers) and Scala alloys, no performance mods, just the 1.8 carb engine.
His was all Alpine white (except the large rear boot spoiler), so it showed the dirt easily, but it looked pretty mean, especially with the low stance and the wide TSW alloys that were on at the time.

Rocco's are cool, unless you are short cos you won't see over the dash easily, or if you have to sit in the back, no leg room at all.

Getting insured on a mk2 golf gti at 18 is exspensive, i got mine  at 18 with 10mths no claims and norwich union insured me on it by swapping the insurance over from a classic 998cc mini. I was paying £200 a month for 2 months and now pay £110 a month. Its well worth it, if you can afford it..do it
