Mk2 Gti at 18?
« on: 30 May 2005, 20:02 »
One of my mate's brothers has said he wants to buy my ickle 1.3, for a pretty good price I feel

My question is do you guys reckon I could get insured on an 8v Gti Mk2 with only 1 years NCB at 18?? I want to stay within the mk2 fold since finding a decent nick mk1 would be a mission , however would also like something a bit faster   I don't mind paying a lot for the insurance but I don't want to get ripped off!

Thanks

GTi insurance at your age is going to be very steep, probably not far off 2 grand, but if you can afford it then go for it, if not go for a 1.3 - 1.8 driver or gl, it is still a golf and will be cheaper to insure till you have gained a few more NCD

yes mate i did. Elephant.co.uk was the best place for me
Insurance isnt as expensive as it seems. You just need to shop around.

yaeh it was 2 grand without no claims. It would of cost me 300 less to get insured on a fiesta Zetec

back in the day.... er 13 years ago...... i think i was paying £440 ish for my 1st car (me old man gave me a mk2 ford crapri 2.0s, yeah not great but when every fooker else is driving mini's/fiestas etc it was great!! lol)

i traded that in when i started buying and selling cars, i got an mk3 xr3i which in 1991/2 was only 6/7 year old car, i think i had to pay £1400 ish tpf+f, then i got a 16v ashtray gte which cost me even more, i decided then as i was changing cars so often to get a traders policy which worked out loads cheaper and i was covered for owt!

Cheers guys - I've spend the last half hour or so getting quotes and it seems that £2k is the benchmark for an 8v, if they'd insure me at all!!

I got a quote of £880 for a 1.8 driver from norwich union, which I think is pretty tempting...the gti isn't £1200 faster is it?

I found it interesting though that a 1.8 carb'd scirocco is the same insurance group as an 8v gti, however I got a quote of £970 for the 'rocco and they wouldnt insure me on a gti!  I'm also tempted by that since I know someone at work that is looking to shift a scirocco

8v's aint worth it then mate. for 1200 less you can save that money do mods

Seen some 1.6 and 1.8 drivers keep up with GTi's. The Gti is just injection version of the 1.8 and better spec like seats to supension if you think about it

yeah get a driver. new exhaust, filter ,gti cam, probably 100bhp(?) for around £500. I'd have been well happy with that at 18!

not a bad quote for the driver or the rocco, ive had a few roccos over the years, there a love em or hate em car, but they go well and will give you your 1st performance kick for a cheap vw that you can insure if thats what your after....
