Loud humming sound
« on: 29 March 2012, 13:16 »
When ever I drive for over 15 minutes, I start to get a loud humming sound, coming from the near side wheel, well think it is from there, sometimes hard to pin point.

It becomes louder and louder the longer I drive, but if I stop in a car park for say 5/10 mins then I can then resume driving without the humming sound starting again for the 15 minutes.

Also , it stops when ever I turn right or when my breaks are pressed...other than that , nothing seems to stop it

Sounds like a bearing, but I'm thrown by the '15 mins before it starts' bit.

Could it be that the first 15mins of every journey you make, is at a slow pace? Do you live about 15mins from a bypass or an A road that you HAVE to use to get anywhere? Bearings tend to drone louder at higher speeds. The absence of noise when turning or under breaking could suggest you are taking off, or increasing the load on the bearing, hence the noise goes away.

Just my penny's worth, hope it helps.

A totalitarian regime, crushes all autonomy in it's drive to seize the human soul.

The noise was happening even at very slow pace yesterday too..was crawling home to Manchester during rush hour and it was humming when I was doing under 10mph.

As for the first part of my journey usually on normal A roads doing about 30/40mph, then I hit the dual carriageway and get up to speed.

Don't some places do a free wheel baring test?

Never done it personally, but so I've been told, if you jack up the entire front of your car, when you turn/spin the wheels with your hand, you should be able to hear if the bearing is fooked :undecided:

Finally booked it in to the local garage yesterday as could not go on with the bloody noise happening each time I wanted to drive longer than 20 minutes.

Wish I had not though, as completely f**ked for money now!

First of all they phoned me up to tell me after taking the car out to test the noise, they thought my front arm brushes were knackered. On inspection they confirm this and have now fitted new ones on both sides for £196.

Then we come to that noise. They say water is leaking on to the brakes, which when it becomes hot, they start to stick , hence the loud noise. This would explain why I only get the noise when driving after a certain time and why it stops again for a while after being parked up.

But, to fix it , they want another £268. So near on £500 it has cost me this weekend now. Not happy at all
