New Owner of a MK2 Golf 16v '89'

Hi,

I used to own an 8v Golf and a MK4 1.8T sold them and brought a MK2 16v, Black 3dr, pukka!

But I need to know a few things before I pick it up on tuesday:

1 - Can I put Unleaded fuel in or does it need S/Unleaded??

2 - Im going to sound really stupid but what is the device that sits on top of the airbox with all the silver leads running off it??  And can I replace these with an induction kit??

3 - How can you get the plastic '90' spec wheel arch trims off without snapping the clips that hold them on??

You should use super unleaded, but you can mix that with normal unleaded, the best fuel for it is optimax. The device on the airbox is called a fuel metering unit, it is built into an airflow 'plunger' which stimulates the fuel injection. The best thing to do is put a k&n panel filter in and drill out the airbox on the front side and wing side.

Welcome to the world of MKII's. I am the owner of an 89 16v myself.

1) S/unleaded is the best route to go with these. this is one car i find a big difference when with the grade of petrol used. I have been told though that the 16v requires a "k star" chip to properl;y use unleaded over 4 star (anyone know the truth in this?)

2) The device on top of the airbox is a part of the fuel injection system. The induction kit on y mates car  included a bracket to replace the top of the airbox. Do not be taken in by the "power rohr tubes" they are a rubbish and a total waste of notes in my opinion. You can save a load of cash by using a K&N panel filter in the original box and drilling a few 25mm holes in the bottom portion of the box along the sides. Worked the trick for me.

3) I have never tried to remove the archs on mine but I would assume that you would have to pull down the inner wheel well to get at the back of the clips to release them sorry I can help on that more.

1:I use optimax and have never had any running problems with the car.

2: The part that sits on top of the airbox is as VR6 rightly put the metering unit, it measures the airflow and delivers fuel to the injectors the corresponds to how high the air flow plate is.

3: To get the arches off you have to drill out the black pop rivets that hold the plastic on the edge of the wheel arch. You can remove them with the underwing covers still in place.
