Brakes! advice needed!
« on: 28 September 2003, 19:08 »
Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I noticed that my brake pedal was softer and needed to be pushed further to get any brakes - the brakes however still worked just the pedal went in further - if u lifted ur foot and braked again immediately the pedal was normal - the pedal travel was at least half of the first brake. They gradually got worse and I had to pump the pedal to get brakes. I got a new master cylinder just over a week ago and when I got the car back the brakes were great! However they have gradually got worse again and although I still have good brakes when I brake the first time the pedal goes to nearly the floor and doesn't if i brake again immediately. If I leave it ten seconds its like first braking again. Also if I lock the wheels up only the driver one skids.

I have a GTI 8v with the brakes of a 16v - everything is off a late 16v. My new master cylinder is also a 16v one for the 3 hoses.

Has anyone any ideas or has this happened to anyone?

All help appreciated!!

You either have air in the system or have an air leak thats letting it in. I found that the rear calipers are a pain to bleed and I had to raise the back of the car on stands and leave it over night to get the air out of the system.

Get the system pressure bled and check that all the unions on the hoses and brake lines are tight.

The best thing to do is clamp each flexible brake hose in turn, if the pedal goes hard then you have found a leaking seal.

Oh don't worry I expect something else to stop working/break!

I already have a few niggly things as it is - ie sometimes car won't idle right - sometimes its fine!

I have no reverse lights and such things!

My hobby continues!!
