Damn Clunking?
« on: 28 May 2005, 14:52 »
K. anyone know why my old girl is clunking when i change gear, this only happens when i change over 2000rpm, if im nice and gentle changing at 1500 (you know she has the torque) no problems. I have changed two out of the three engine mounts. other sugestions have been driveshaft or gearbox, and suspension. The noise is from the front mainly NSR only sometimes its bad enough to feel it through the floor. only i am running low on the precious green stuff, and i dont want to waste more moola trying to cure this relentless reminder of fragility.

late 88 (F) Mk2 1800 8v, non PAS, 5dr.

cheers, johnny.

i reckon change the other mount as well, if not then id go with checking that the bolts into your driveshafts are in tight enough

have a good look at the mounts and brackets if it feels like something moves or lifts before the clunk id get the mounts and mounting brackets checked asap if its not only things i can think of are the wishbones or the suspension itself on that side is knackered.

yeah i remember having a clunking noise that was related to the wishbone, someone had forgotten to put the metal sleeve in when they put a new wishbone on and it had worked itself loose.  Namely me
oops :embarassed: sorted now tho

cheers guys i think you might be on to something...i had the wishbones changed last year, and being a tight ass got non-geniune ones. the clunking has slowly increased since then, they also seem to be almost an inch too long either side. im still a bit suspicious of the driveshaft tho, so i will check that out too. it will be easier now i know what im looking for. thanks! jb.

might have been cheep bushes on the wishbones aswell  buy vw you cant really go wrong with genuine stuff. not sure if it will work but try bouncing that side of the car up and down see if it makes the same noise worth a try :D
