Latest firmware for RNS 510
« on: 14 March 2012, 12:25 »
Does anyone know what changes there are with the latest RNS 510 firmware. I am aware we can now get the full use of seven digit postcodes, but is there anything else?

Not sure it is the firmware that provides the 7 digit postcode. I have a 2010 car with Version 2680 firmware and the maps that came with the car did not give the full postcode, I uploaded V8 maps and now have the full 7 digits and speed cameras. Haven't found anything else, but then haven't been looking.

Yeah it's the maps that provide the post code searching......... Not sure what difference the firmware makes..... but as far as I'm aware, if it ain't broke, don't fix it because if something goes wrong flashing the firmware then you could brick the unit. Maps, on the other hand, are pretty safe to update.

Did you download the updated maps from the Web? If so, are they transferred to the unit via DVD or USB stick? Haven't got mine yet but just checking in advance.

Yeah you can download them off the Internet if you know how, I believe you can only transfer them using DVD, I think I had to use a dual layer DVD as the file was too big for a standard DVD

Thanks Scott, is this a likely site? http://www.rns510.de/EN/html/kartenupdates.html I'm assuming when I get my new car you can log on using your VIN or some other unique identifier?

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that since VW charge for map updates. You can either buy the disc from them for an extortionate amount or acquire it by other methods which aren't allowed to be discussed on the forum.

No I bought a disc from a reseller, didn't fancy paying VW prices, but still paid £80. Apparently genuine, but not boxed.
