GL 4+E or gti?
« on: 12 March 2012, 19:42 »
On the lookaout for a cheap mk2 gti and ive found a local person selling a H reg GL 4+E, only 81k on it same owner for 18 years then 2 family members of theres. It looks similar to a gti, same grill and big bumpers. Whats the difference? its a 1.8 8v - is it the same engine as the gti? its a maroon/burgundy colour. Is it worth getting or should I hold out for a gti?

Errrr GL will be carb, GTI injection both 8V blocks
Many GL's can look like GTI's but trust me its not! Plus some GL's are auto boxes GTi's arent!

If thats what you want mate there are load of decent 8V Gti's out there!
The one thing you must look out for is Rust and a decent history!
I've owned a GL and it was great but I was 17 at the time so insurance wouldn't kill me it still did being a 1.8ltr!
If you decide to get a GL one that has a Webber carb is better than a stock Pierburg carb. It will be aftermarket with a manual choke. The Pierburgs are temperalmental at best of times! But fun memories of my old gal never missed a beat for an 89!

I've seen a few gti's but most seem to have rust around the scuttle panel, is this replaceable?

£800-£1000K is alright, might be high miler, but you never know?
I prefer good body to engine because a respray and body work can cost thousands more than the car's worth so to speak!
Sourcing a second hand engine can be found cheaply aswell!
I would stick to a 90-92 better electrics and should in theory have lower miles small bumpers are like vogue so where big bumpers.
Choice is when you view one and the car feels right colour, interior, sound and MOT and TAX helps

I've seen a nice one on edition, bright blue metallic. Apparently no rust, reduced to £875, but too far away :(
