Few 16v questions

Hello all, couple of questions.

Sloppy gearstick thats easy to slip into reverse when you want 1st. How easy is this to fix, is it a case of fitting a bush repair kit. IS there a link to  DIY instructions??

Also the car im just about to pick up has this odd prob, when revs drop down, ie coming up to a set of red lights just for a second or 2 the starter kicks in??? Looks like its had a new starter recently. Any ideas???

you need to replace the ball & housing on the bottom of the gearstick, its an underneath the car job but very cheap fix - get the parts from VW though!! Golf mag covered it about 18mths ago pics n all

as for the starter - thats a weird one! is it defo the starter thats kickin in? must some sorta wiring fault there for that to happen!!

Cheers Gambit do you know the part numbers or anything. I hate going to the stealership unless I know exactly what im talking about!

Ill probably be bothering you all over the next few weeks as I have just bought M.P.H's 16v with Leather. Lovely car and a new project for me!

Thats what I thought about the starter, or ignition module?

nice one, M.P.H.'s 16v was gorgeous and going for really cheap money!! u got yourself a good'un!

as for the part nums, sorry i dont know - get somebody (veedub8v is a good bet) to look up the ETKA for you

the starter one really has got me stumped, unless its a problem with the ignition barrel itself

cheers, yeah its a weird one the starter. I thought an earth or something. First job will be to clean up all the connections and go from there!

I think I might get the bush repairs done at a garage, sounds like a bit of a nightmare job...

on the selectin reverse problem, have you looked under the gearstick gaitor to see what condition the wee stopper is in, the stopper prevents you pushing straight across into reverse, hence u have to push down to go under it

when you lift up the gearstick gaiter boot it all become clear.

only other thing i can think of is maybe the alignment is out. that way 5th would be v.hard to select and ud find yourself slipping into reverse instead of 1st!

Anyone on here have the special VW tool to do the alignment?? If so would you lend/rent it to me for a weekend??

If you find it hard to get into 5th this could be an alignment problem, or the small link rod in the engine bay with the plastic end pieces is broken, the one in my 1.6 Driver had a hairline crack in it which made it very difficult to select 5th.  Also if you can slip into reverse without pressing down the stick it can be the reverse gate stop like gambit says or the gearstick housing under the car has worn, I had this both on my 1.6 Driver and my 8v GTI.

The gearlever housing is pretty straightforward to do but a bit fiddly, idealy you need a mate to help you!  You can still get the repair kit from VW, part number is 191 798 116A. I would recommend you get the genuine kit, this isn't a job you want to be doing twice!.

1. Remove the gearstick gaitor & centre console to give you more room to work
2. Undo the 2 10mm nuts either side of the gearstick.

Now get under the car
3. Remove the exhaust centre heat shield by removing the 6 nuts/clips holding it on, then rotate it round the exhaust an off the car
4. Shove the housing up into the car, it is only held in by gravity & grease at this point ;)
5. Remove 4 13mm nuts holding the plate
6. Now get back in the car, pull up on the stick and push down on the plate you have just undone
7. Next Jiggle the housing about untill you can get it out
8. If the ball looks like it is worn you can remove it, I didn't bother as it looked OK. Its tricky, you need to press the ball upwards while someone holds the gearlever down, then you need to remove the split pin.  Not an easy task!
9. Refitting is the reverse of removal :)
