Top up sir?
« on: 10 March 2012, 13:53 »
Afternoon all,

Heading to Brighton in the Gtiiiiiii this afternoon, checked the oil and it appears bone dry on the dipstick. I've just put half a litre of fully in it so at least I know it now has oil, is this normal? It was serviced 5 months ago, as I'm an estate agent I do, do freaquent short runs and mainly London driving but with the occasional long run. Also I cannot see any oil leaks, do these cars use a lot of oil?

It run perfectly, no smoke, 08 plate with 65k under the belt.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the fsi engines do tend to use more oil than a "norma"l one. You should therefore make periodic checking of your oil level part of your maintanence regime.

I try and check my oil at least once a week. Performance engines tend to use oil. My Civic Type R was just the same.

Concerns me that it was low enough for you to use the word "bone dry" but you didnt get any low level warning lights on, odd.

FYI mine hardly uses any oil. Cant remember the last time I topped it up and there is still plenty in there

Mines exactly the same. See all these threads about oil use and since owning mine from Sept '10 I've never had to top it up between services and I've 18k miles in that time

My last 05 GTI AXX Engine code used a bit of oil but my ED30 never needs a top up between servicing.

Vw russ I presume you did check your oil when the engine was cold? Because if you check the oil when the engine is warm you will get an inaccurate reading. Just a thought!
