Exhaust help
« on: 07 March 2012, 09:19 »
I need to clear something up. I have decided to put a new exhaust on my mk 4 1.8t golf and have been speaking to amachanic friend of mind and he has given me some info and has spoke to me about a full cat back system and a de-cat  etc,

I spoke to another friend and he said a de-cat is nto a good idea as it will fail an emmisions test.

Whats the best thing i can do?

Just go for a full cat back system and keep my existing down pipe? or can someone reccomend me some products,

Thanks from a n00b

Cat back with a sports cat.
tbh, modern cats dont really affect the performance of an engine.

i've found sports cats to be very expensive and above my budget at the moment, can i get away with just a cat back and keep my existing rest of the exhaust, of just get a standard replacement down pipe?

Thanks for your help/

As far as I know you can, but I have not done anything with turbos.

He is correct, it will fail the mot unless you refit the cat for the mot.

No problems at all with doing that.

perfect, thanks for you advice

i've done a bit more reading, im trying to get as much info as possible and have read that if i was to put on a new cat back then in order to get optimum gains, the fitting of a large bore downpipe and sports cat is a must.

Can you tell me how much of a MUST it really is, as allready stated i want to get the car remapped, but at this rate i will be waiting another 2 years as at the moment it looks like i have to fork out £1000 on part before i can do this.

Truthfuly how much of a difference will i see between a stage 1 remap on a mk4 1.8t 150bhp golf with a large bore downpipe and sports cat, compared to without it, and just a new cat back.

Thanks again in advance and sorry for being a n00b
