I had the same problem on a mk1 2nd gear crunch all the time
I put fresh gearbox oil and a tube of forte gearbox/diff treatment in and it was 100% better

Syncro on second gear is tired, as above change the gearbox oil for good quality stuff and if that doesnt cure it use double clutch stop the crunch

If its a 1990 gear box with the car level you fill until it just runs out of the filler.  On the early boxes the filler hole was lower and you need to remove the speedo cable and add some extra through there.  About 0.5 litres.   Be careful removing the cable.

Woth checking the selector rods!
You might get lucky just changing some of the worn out plastic joints in the selectors unit
They are cheap plus a weighted rod might help make selection smoother if you dont have one in there already?

+1
Worn linkage can make gear changes terrible.
I made new bushes out of Bronze and bought a kit from TSR (i think) which replaced the plastic UJ's with metal ones.
It is one of the best upgrades you can do to a Mk2
If that or the oil change does not help or cure your problem then its a box rebuild
