Hi all,

Sorry if this has been dealt with before but I can`t seem to find answers to this issue.

It all started 2 weeks ago when I replaced other halfs battery on her GTi 1.8T.  I stupidly assumed it would be straightforward as it is on many other cars I`ve had.

After the battery was reconnected I noticed the revs were dropping very close to stall (about 500-700RPM) though thankfully it never once cut out completely.
I did a bit of research and learnt that post battery disconnection the car will need a throttle body alignment.
I didn`t have the laptop version of VAG-COM just a handheld one and my handheld didn`t come up with anyy engine fault codes so I took it to my local garage where he put his laptop with presumable vag-com on it and gave the car back to us claiming there were other throttle related problems on the car.

After his dabbling the low idle rev problem had ceased but after driving a while when you stop at traffic lights etc the idle RPM starts to creep up towards 1300 RPM.

I put my code reader on it and it came up with the following ;

17967 -035 KWP 1281
throttle Valve
Control Part (J338):
Fault in basic settings

I`m assuming the set up my garage did was incorrect as I didn`t have these fault codes before.

The next thing I noticed was that the coolant temp guage was quite erratic only ever achieving the normal 90 degrees while at a standstill. When driving it seems to reach about 70 degrees and no higher.

I replaced the coolant temp sensor as I had the following code

16500 -163 KWP1281
Engine Coolant Temp
Sensor (G62):
Implausible Signal:
P 0116

The fault remained.  I`m guessing its not wiring as if the wiring was intermittent so would the indication be intermittent.

Does anybody with experience in the above think that the sensor issue is a total coincidence as both problems have only existed after the battery disconnection?

Should I disconnect/reconnect again to hopefully return to the original problem (low revs)

I have since purchased a 409.1 cable and downloaded the VDCS lite software in the hope than I can sort the throttle body alignment myself but I don`t seem to be getting very far, the laptop does talk to the ECU but I don`t seem to be able to access many of the modules to change/reset anything.

If anyone has had similar or can point me in the right direction I`d appreciate it as it`s starting to do my nut in.

If I have to purchase the software from ross-tech to do this properly then I`m more than happy to do so.

Once again sorry if this has be covered before.
Cheers

Rich

Needs throttle body aligned, garage may have just upped the idol revs and now it's aligned itself it's idling at a higher rate.

As for the temp sounds like it can be the termostat if it sits on 90 when stationary then go for a drive up a bypass or something if te temp them drops pull over, if it goes back up when idoling/stationary it's the thermostat
