Oh guys youve put me in a pickle now... Im selling my 16valver but was thinking of getting an 8valve as a daily, but that would mean selling my super reliable and economic mk5 GT TDI. Honest question... would that be a good idea? Fun factor aside (because i KNOW the mk2 wins everytime for fun) would it still be worth it in terms of reliability and cost? Because im out of work at the moment and dont want to have to keep spending, but i do love the mk2??

IMO Yes it makes sense to me - I use my MK2 8V as a daily and I've never had such a cheap car to have.... Just make sure you buy a good one...

In 3 years of owning it all I've had to spend is 3 lots of services @ £125 a year and a set of Disks, Pads, Battery & a Clutch but I knew it needed one when I bought it...

A six month service on my RS6 cost more than I've spent in 3 years...

Owned mine for three months, only driven it the first week I bought it and it's still broken..

I've loved every minute working on it and that week of driving it was a ridiculous amount of fun. So desperate to get it back on the road for the summer.

Well i service my cars myself, im not bad at DIY mechanics (servicing, brakes, etc) so that wouldnt cost me labour. Just things like clutches, fuel mixture settings and those things i wouldnt want to do myself. I just dont want to get one and end up feeling like i couldt quite trust it, my mk5 id trust to live in but thats because i know the car and it hasnt got the age on it.
Are they good on petrol?

Depends on how you drive it... but in the main very good - I get 35mpg mixed and up to 40 on a run... Hammer it and you get 27.5!

How I'd love to own a MK2 again ...

Maybe I'll give my wife the Passat and get myself a MK2

Cheers Bush.

I spent 4 hours valeting both cars and I have to say they do look the dog's conkers. The Mk2 has come up like it's virtually brand new. Bloody marvelous.

The problem now is I'm paranoid about parking it. Been to Sainsbury's today in it and parked it about 14 miles from the door with at least 5 spaces either side of me so that I don't get some tosser in an MPV and 7 kids banging their door next to me!!!!!
