I agree, I've wanted one for years and finally got one, it needs loads done to it but it's still brilliant.  Best car I've ever had :D

When I bought my valver from Newport a few years ago, I pulled into McDonalds in Newport to check it over - and eat -  and a random good looking distinguished chap, beard and all, in fact a lot like Thom, walked across a massive car park just to look at the Golf and say:

"I used to have one of those. Best car I ever had. Fantastic."

After owning many new cars, I have to agree.

I've said before I get loads of people commenting on mine. Just random people saying "nice car" and such like.

I also get a bit nostalgic cos my very first date with the wife was in a 1.6 Mk2 Driver that her dad had at the time. For some reason I can't really remember I didn't like Golfs at the time (I think I thought they were basic) but now when she drives me to the pub in the valver, like she did 20 years ago, it feels strangely ironic how we've come full circle. And the year of our first date (1991) was the year my valver was born so it was clearly meant to be!!!!

Sorry, it must be the whisky talking now.......

I wonder if Mk3 owners get the same attention?

My first car was a Mk2 Golf.  1.3 Mars Red 3 door, and for similar reasons to you - first girlfriend, first car etc - I still have it.  It's not seen the light of day since 1999, but one day...
