Hi, My name is Fil and I am an alcoholic....
« on: 25 May 2005, 14:44 »
Hi,

....well not really

I go by the name of Zeuxis, I come from Norway but I have been living in London for 7 years now.

I have recently moved jobs which requires me to get a car and me always having an eye on VW I decided I want to get one as my first car, the one that I will remember for the rest of my life :)

I decided to join you guys to build some knowledge and make a decision what exactly I should go for + hopefully make few friends with same interests.

Hope I'll be welcome :)

hmm well its all a bit weird. IÂ’m 27 this year, have changed my license to UK one and its been issued since I was 18, but since IÂ’m still on Norwegian passport IÂ’m a bit worried on insurance so that might limit my choices a bit. IÂ’m thinking of spending on a car max 4k.

A old college I had a little chat with suggested I get a good MK2. Saying that, I like the modern interior of golfÂ’s with rounder wheel and board etc. I was thinking of Corrado just donÂ’t know how reliable they are and if I can get anything good for my price range. Being a guy (last time I checked ) I want a golf that looks nice on the outside, hey if I could I would get MK5 GTI... lol but I am willing to add some work on it, though having to admit it IÂ’m a nOOb to those things...

You could get the best of the best for 4k if you went for a mk2, however as you say you prefer a more modern car it might be better to go for a mk3 or mk4 golf. You could get a cracking mk3 golf vr6 for 4k you could just about squeeze a mk4 gti for 4k these days but as it's the bottom of the price range expect high mileage or shady service history etc.
If you were thinking of a corrado the 16v is pretty competent, the G60 is pretty potent but has a lot of maintainence issues to consider, again the VR6 would be the corrado to go for and 4k should get you a pretty tidy one.

Hope this helps

Go for a Corrado VR6. Bit of style about the car. If not that, then a Golf VR6 with leather etc. The 16 valvers are very good too.

Don't think the passport thing will change anything on insurance as long as you have had the UK licence a while and been in UK for a few years. At 27 you should get you cheap insurance. I find elephant.co.uk the cheapest for myself, and added my dad to the policy to lower it even more (don't why that works but it always does!)

cheers guys, good info ( and hi yall )

Ttaking the modern interior to the side now, I will be doing quite a millage, about 66000 a year :undecided: so I need something very reliable and fun to drive, would a corradoVR6 do that? (based on my price range).

Cheers again :)

I can personally vouch for a Corrado VR6. Mine is more fun to drive than any other car I have owned. It an be a bit thirsty when you give it some stick, but everything has its price. The handling is superb and it is really responsive. You wont regret buying one.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture
