« on: 05 March 2012, 18:11 »
hi there i was wondering if a rcd 510 would work in a 2005 golf gti without upgrading the canbus for the battery drain issue the seller says the unit is a 2010 model and is it a straight forward swap from an rcd 300 cheers

I am sure you will have to upgrade the can bus, although there might be a firmware which avoids the battery drain.

i had a 2010 unit which drained battery on my 2006 gti.  spoke to dealer after installing it and getting battery drained and they said that canbus upgrade is the only way to go.

Would be surprised if VW upgraded firmware on unit to make it work with older models - why would they ?

You will also find that the connections on the back of the unit and not a 100% fit to replace those from the RCD300 although they can be stretched and "jimmied" to make them fit.

I mean there is probably a firmware update online that can be installed to avoid the battery drain.

Although I upgraded the canbus on my 2007 (56 plate) when I fitted the RNS510. Mainly for peace of mind as couldn't be bothered with the hassle of dealing with battery drain.

Hi,

I have recently found a chap in Surrey who owns a company called SatNav Systems. He used to work for VW for 6 years and is an absolute wizard regarding VW/Audi radios and ICE equipment.
His name is Hamid and his number is: 0808 222 0000 (http://www.satnavsystems.com)

If you can't find the answer he will definitely be able to help you!

Hope this helps!

I wouldn't expect any help from this firm unless you are going to buy something expensive from them.

I rang to ask them a question about the OEM bluetooth I was fitting, thinking that I may need a new loom that they could sell me. They said they did not offer support to non-customers, but would send someone out for a call out fee £80+VAT, then charge for any work on top of that.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
