Cambelt change (sorry - again)
« on: 05 March 2012, 10:50 »
Hi All

Long time no speak ...

So my Ed30 has done 72k miles and is four years old on the 13 March.

It passed its second MoT on Friday but Inchape Telford have advised the cambelt needs changing at 4yo / 80k, which obv is soon!

Inchape have quoted 420 quid for the change, they stated this was discounted from about 600 - not sure if this includes the water pump change.

Does this sound reasonable to peeps?

Thanks

Martin

You should be able to get it done at Awesome much cheaper and that includes the recommended water pump change at the same time.

my local VW stealer called me just after christmas and offered to do it for £329, excluding water pump.

However I had mine done for £299 a year ago at different dealer, plus it was another £100 for water pump, including fitting.

so £420 from a main dealer is about right, if it includes the water pump

Figured I'd post in here rather than in my own thread. I had my first service (bought car @ 44k) after 10k miles (@54k) only a month or so ago. I'm at 58.5k miles now. The dealer noted on my service sheet that I need my cam belt doing in August. But I'm not sure if this is just a guideline for people with low miles or he thinks it's perfectly fine until then. Do you think I should get it done as soon as it hits 60k? There was confusion at the VW Dealer about what year / mileage it's supposed to be done. Any advice on what I should do? It's a 58 plate TDI (1.9).

its not just about mileage, its about time.

Rubber deterioates over time, so every 4 years is recommended.  granted low mileage cars may 'last' many more than 4 years, but would you risk it snapping and then needing a new engine?

I see. Will it state the mileage in which it should be changed in my handbook? I'm sure the useless person who worked at the dealer said a four year timeline but originally thought it was 80k and then corrected himself to 60k  :undecided:

cam belt changes have been confusing for years
it used to be 80k or 5years whichever came first but think they recently changed it to 80k or 4 years.
my ed30 is 4 years old in june but only done 25k and thinking of having it done.

its unlikely to break but everyone will recommend having it done to avoid giving duff advice
