Heat shield & Clips
« on: 03 March 2012, 20:59 »
Spent the day working on my 16v.

Replaced the rear wheel bearings and then moved on to the rear shocks and springs along with all the other rubber bushes etc at the top of the shocks.

Whilst I was under the car I reset the angle of the exhaust to make the tips sit level and noticed that the heat shields are becoming a little tatty / corroded.

So to my question....is there anyone out there who does them?

I also will need the clips / nuts that hold thm in place....any suggestions anyone??

Good luck it took me awhile to source a secondhand one then I used a coke can to reinforce the hook strips to the seal ontop!
clips are screw on types to bulkhead threads they come in packets of two from VAG last time I bought some they where like £2.50 odd each I think might be less or more can't remember I can try and dig out the part number for you at some point!

Hmmm, coke cans ey? Good idea. Did you pop rivet the coke can strips to the existing heat shield? The probelem I have (probably the same as everyone else) is that where the clips / nuts / fixings screw on the heat shield has corroded away and so the bloody things rattle like a rattle snakes arse!!

I'll ask my friendly (but horredously expensive) VAG dealer for the clips / screws.

If the threads are done the only thing that could help is using rust killer on it then once dry you could use PVC tape wrap it a couple of times so it builds up the thickness of the threads then when you screw on the clips they might hold better? Essentially making a new thread by force!

I think they are called star washers and just push onto a serrated pin. On mine the star washer had started to disintegrate and the pin was corroded. So I bought new pins and star washers. But the pins are buried in undreseal and looked a right pig to remove so I just put new star washers on the old pins. Not perfect but better than the old knakered washers even though there is not much left of the pins.

I got the pins and washers from VW a year or so back but most likely still available.
