DSG gearbox 2010+
« on: 03 March 2012, 14:43 »
Anybody have any idea how much power a dsg gearbox can safely handle?
It really needs to be reliable, is modifying them extremely expensive?
I take it the box is the same on the r and gti

Carnt find anything on google specific to the gti or r thanks

Wasn't Hurdy running 350-400 BHP and similar torque through his DSG with no problems?

HGP seem to run 500+ BHP twin turbo R32s via DSG with little issues too.

It's hardly the power that's likely to be a problem. Power doesn't kill 'boxes...torque does.
I'd imagine the wet clutches become the weak point before the mechanical strength of the 'box does.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

I think it's the torque that's critical

350Nm limit springs to mind as the usually quoted limit

Hurdy got his clutches upgraded in the end I think, and he did have a minor problem if I remember,  that was solved with a good DSG service (oil change).

Thanks, would an exhaust fuel pump intercooler and injectors with stage 2 map break 350 torque?

According to Superchips a Stage 1 remap gets 372Nm and the Stage 2 is 446Nm which means both exceed the 350NM limit.

I ran stage 2 on my MK5 for 5 years but I think it only made 360Nm.

I have heard of many people running both stage 1 and 2 with std plates, I would suggest you try it and then if you have problems get the upgrade.
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

Tried that on my manual gti with stage 2, clutch lasted like 2days

same.... serious issue with clutch slip.some cars seem to cope better than others. A dsg remap was available for the mk5 iirc, would imagine there is one for the mk6 also.
