my mates mk 3 8v gti was cutting out.... today it was at the dealers.... they said it was the engine speed sensor!

i understand this is mounted on the block near to the dizzy.... do you need to drain the oil and take the oil filter off to get at it! as it says that in the haynes.....

i know you have to drain the oil to take your filter off.. but i've not seen the sender... if you take this sensor off will oil come out of the hole!!

i'm not sure what this detects..... ie the fly wheel.... but i have a feeling it detects the intermediate shaft at tdc which turns the dizzy!! am i right!

reason i ask is because my mate has been quoted £280 for it to be fixed this is including a £30 diagnostic check!

because now ive been on the net and scearched i cant see this engine speed sensor being over £150!
just wondering why its £250 to fix!!

anyway i have a hall sender on the vr6 which measures the camshaft.... is this engine speed sensor the same as my hall sender on the vr6.........?? also does the vr6 have a speed sensor aswell!!

i havent really checked the vr6 engine out as we've not had to work on it aprt from oil changes...
and i dont know much about my mates gti!!

also now i know its the engine speed sensor now my mates paying £280
i've found a site which tell me this!! ah isnt it funny that i could find one before he too it the garage!!
abit late now but uself for future reference!!!!!!

VW charge 60 quid plus VAT an hour.
Try doing the job yourself, it can't be that difficult on an 8v.
BTW the vr6 has an engine speed sensor as well as a cam sender.

i noticed it on the vr6!!

i went up tonight it was £320!! i thought that they may have had to drain the oil and remove the oil filter as it says in the haynes.. basicly if you need room to get at it!!

alls they have done replaced the sensor which was £120... they have charged £170 labour and then £30 for the test... bloody ridiclious... it should have been £280 but £320!! i'd have done it for £50 myself!!

i know in future any senders go on my cars i will do them myself... the cam sender started to play up...
the car was starting to go slow so we replaced it it was dubble the £20 price we paid before but we knew that it must be this and was worth a risk of buying it.....

it does run faster now but its still not right... but it does need the plugs and fuel filter changing!!
and a slight fuel leak!! when i can find where its coming from!!
