Mk2 8v digi Possibe ECU issues, can you help ?
« on: 29 February 2012, 21:38 »
Hi
Ok i bought a cheap 8v and it ran rough, would not idle well and stalled
I replaced the leads and plugs and dizzy cap and rotor, no joy, replaced all the vacuum hoses as they were perished, no joy, cleaned the idle air control valve (or whatever its called), no joy, replaced the Blue sensor and reset the ECU
Success !
It ran well and idled a lot better not perfect but a LOT better

So i decided to put the chip in i had form Advanced Motorsport Engineering. i have had it a while and never used it
I was unsure which port on the ECU to put it in, either the secondary upper board connected by the ribbon cable or the main lower board
I went for the main lower board and put it all together. car would not start.. so i stripped it down and changed it to the secondary board, car would not start, removed chip and replaced original

Car will not start. good spark and i can hear the fuel pump fire up and stop, not run on and fill the cylinders with fuel
When i looked closely at the ECU i found a broken trace on the PCB. i repaired the break but it still wont start
All earth leads are good too

Any ideas ?
Slim

That looks knackered to me, better to replace it or try another unit.

I have another ECU arriving on friday but wanted to at least try to figure out what went wrong so it does not happen to my new ECU

How strange cars can be
The GTI was left at work all day without the Ecu attached because I was busy
I finished work and plugged it in and turned the key on the off chance it would work
And hey presto it fired up !
I find it weird that I had done nothing but remove the ecu, take it home with the idea of attempting to maybe fix it
Left it on the kitchen counter overnight and took it back the next morning where it sat on a bench until 6:30 pm when I plugged it back In and it works now

Bizarre
But I'm happy it runs

if you piss about with eprom and put the wrong one in, or one in with the wrong data on it or the data in the wrong adreeses they will throw a fit and sulk,  put it back to original and leve them powerd down quite often they forgive you
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Well i'm glad

This ECU / chip programming is interesting i have some experience messing about with the modding of xbox's including flash chips and checking data
I may buy an eeprom reader and have a play with some chips in the future
