broken spring - safe to drive?!?!?!
« on: 24 February 2012, 20:22 »
the top half turn has snapped off my drivers side front coil.

only seems noticeable when doing a sharp turn at low speed such as it a car park etc.

otherwise seems normal to drive, ride height, wheel arch clearance etc, all appears ok.

would it be ok to drive for a bit??

Defo not good to drive. The spring can easily move and the front corner will collapse. Would more than likely then puncture the tyre and could affect the brake pipes. Is really easy to repkace and cheap enough too.

You should keep an eye on springs for excessive corrosion because if they snap then the corner will drop most likely with a bang. I took my car in for a caliper strip and grease and the mechanic showed me how one of my rear springs had snapped and settled. You would not have known without looking but I had it changed there and then. If it was not already in pieces in the garage I would have changed the springs myself as it's such an easy job.

i think mine has settled as it not that obvious apart from when turning. even pushing down on the wing (usual suspension check) doesn't give anything away.

is it really that easy as don't want to pay the garage a couple of hundred quid! :(

might give it ago just need to get some spring compressors. is there a good online guide to doing it anywhere?

Whereabouts are you ??  It is an easy job and should take about an hour with a tea break. A garage should charge around 60 quid just to change a spring. I would not consider driving the car with a snapped spring !!!!!

It's worth remembering that you should always replace suspension components in pairs
