That brilliant news.

Did he tell you what was wrong with the 'old' engine.......how worn was it?

Tell us what what wrong with the grearbox to warrant you getting it replaced?

Does it go like stink now?

There was nothing wrong with the old engine. It was high mileage so I decided to have engine stripped, overhauled and rebuilt. Any parts that needed replacing were replaced. Any parts that didn't were cleaned and painted. Pistons were replaced, but because standard GTi pistons are no longer available they were replaced with Wossner pistons. These took engine closer to 1800cc. Cylinder head was flowed as I wanted a little more power/acceleration.
The reasons for the gear box replacement were:
1. Bearings in the diff output shaft were shot. Rob showed me the excess play on mine and then showed me his rebuilt gearbox where there was no play at all.
2. There were chunks missing on 2nd and 3rd gear splines. Not drastic but as gearbox was apart might as well replace them.
3. Something wrong with reverse, but can't remember what.
Rob was going to order the parts in and replace them. He was on a tight timeline due to other cars waiting. He offered to give me his gearbox that he had already rebuilt, same again any parts that needed replacing were replaced, and he would keep mine to rebuild at a later date. I was happy with that. If he's prepared to fit it in his car he can fit it in mine.

Does she go like stink? If I want her to, yes .

The main reason for all the work was to extend her life. I could have waited till engine had given up and then fitted another engine but I always wanted to keep original parts, or as much as possible. Well, with newly rebuilt engine and newly rebuilt gearbox she should keep going for a few donkeys more.

Ok, for anyone who doesn't know, I had the car done at CFM Engineering in Reading.

A small company co-owned by Mark and Rob. Rob is the guy did the work on my engine and gearbox. If you thinking about having some work done on your engine give them a call. Just mention my name, Richard Lewis with the white GTi.
