steering wheel out
« on: 22 February 2012, 16:52 »
I've had the tracking checked and it was spot on on front but the steering wheel is still out by about quarter turn. I've had new wheels put on since tracking and its still out so wasnt a dodgy wheel or anyhing. I know the wishbone bushes are shot, would this cause steering wheel to be out? What else could it be?

Well they should straighten the steering wheel, lock it and then set the tracking.

if any bushes or suspension parts are  worn then you shouldn't have tracking done till they are done as this wont give a true reading .
the rear tracking flags , they have to have the same number each side this puts the steering wheel straight
the front tracking gauges set up the tracking toe in and toe out and would be set to stop wearing on tyres
If i was you i would get worn bushes done A.S.A.P then take it back you should get a free recheck with 28 days and tell them you want your free recheck and tell them that steering  wheel is out they will readjust

as said thay clamp steering wheel and adjust tracking, had my vauxhall omega v6 tracking done at elite's as my steering wheel was well out and thats what thay did, i had 4 wheel alignment done and car drove really nice after having it done my rear camber was wrong and fitted metal shims to correct it, a very well spent £60 i got a nice graph of before and after a good thing to have done if you have had a lot of suspension parts changed something i would like to do to mine.

even when the wheels locked to do tracking its still difficult to get it dead centre as your relying on the rear wheels for dead straight and it nevers works out that way, mines still out off when i got my tracking done but when i get time im gonna remove and turn the steering wheel.

there is no adjustment for the rear on a golf, could have took a knock in its life. but if its driving straight then dont worry about it.

what bushes you getting poly for? they can be quite harsh
