Power loss
« on: 22 February 2012, 13:01 »
Hi guys,

Well after three weeks of Mk5 2.0 FSI ownership I'm not off to a great start ! In the first week it had a coolant leak and in the second week I noticed that the AC wasn't working properly. The weather was very cold when I tested it during the test drive so had assumed it was working. One night whilst trying to spot the coolant leak I suddenly noticed that the AC compressor wasn't even connected to the drive belt ! It was also seized solid - hence the 'bodge'. Anyway back it went to the dealer I bought it from (who are quite well thought of locally ) They were as suprised as me but paid to have it replaced and the coolant leak repaired ( a plastic water pipe on the engine? ). So I get the car back and few days later am driving along a dual carriageway for a few miles at a steady 80mph. When I slowed right down for a roundabout I put my foot down to cross it only to find that I had absolutely no power - it felt like it was only firing on 2 cylinders and ESP light came on. I managed to crawl off the roundabout and pull over. The engine was still running very very 'lumpy' So I switched off and started to think about calling the RAC. But before I did I thought I'd just see if the car would even start. It fired up straight away and the ESP light went out. I thought I'd try cautiously driving on to  a safer place to stop but the car drove completely normally after that and throughout the return journey. It was very worrying and I was not impressed - I don't want to think what might have happened if it had done this in the fast lane on a busy motorway ! My old GTI 16V never did anything like this in ten years of ownership. Has anyone else had the same symptom and did you get to the bottom of it ?

Could be a coilpack misfire issue throwing the car into limp mode.
Without traction power is nothing!

I got my coil packs recalled so it may be worth contacting VW, just in case.
