noise
« on: 19 February 2012, 19:21 »
anyone got an idea what this noise is. I start car put it in first gear and start to let clutch out car moves of i give it a little more throttle and as the clutch is all most fully out I get this noise its like a brake rubbing  but the car moves easily so its not that, if i move of with no throttle there is no noise  it also happens in reverse ,it only makes this noise when you move of, once the clutch if fully out the car is perfect no noises gearbox is smooth and car runs fine the car is two years old and only done 16000 miles

Might be better to record the noise and post an mp3 or wav file.

Hi, just had my clutch plate, bearing replaced for a similar noise uner warrenty. They call it "clutch whoop", apparently caused by a spring vibrating in the clutch plate. It is regstered on the system. Mine did it every time under load, and more so when it was cold, now fixed and no noises at all, but a little dissapointed, as i did not expect VW to have a problem like this, but after all it is mechanical. Hope you get it sorted.

I have the same problem also the guy next door to me has a garage and is a GTI enthusiast so I asked him to have a look. He checked things over and came back and said it was my winter tyres that was making that noise. Do you guy’s have winter tyres? Thought was a strange answer

I have this noise too but as is always the way the VW bloke could not replicate when I took the car in. I've struggled to find a pattern to it happening but it's pretty obvious when it does. It might happen all day and then not for a week, I've even tried clutch killing hill starts in 2nd gear and that's not consistantly producing the "owl " noise.

Does it get worse with time?
Any one got a method to make the noise more often than not?

With only a few months warranty left I hoping to get sorted sooner rather than later.

Cheers
Lee

In answer to the winter tyres, no that issue is more like a drumming noise at certain speeds caused by the uneven wear on the rears (i have dunlops fitted at present). For the clutch whoop, you need to load the car up, i got the dealer to fill the car with mechanics, and then drive up a steep hill, which placed the clutch under load, and then they will replace the clutch once they have heard the noise.
