Bracket from Golf Mk1 Cabrio
« on: 17 February 2012, 11:41 »

Can anyone identify the bracket above and where it is fitted?

It is rusted a little in the centre section but the ends have no rust suggesting they are hidden at their mounting.

Car is a 1990 Golf Cabrio.

Many thanks.

Sorry nobody seems to be able to help with this.. Where did you get it from?  Are you sure you need it?

Hi and thanks for picking this thread up......

The bracket came with the box of bits that are for the engine compartment. The car wwas bought by me with a partially rebuilt engine and I'm trying to finish/reassemble.

I'm not sure if I need the bracket.... I cannot see where it might go.

Will keep trying and get back to you

Ah well that helps knowing that it was from a box of engine bits although I still don't recognise it...  What engine is it?  You never know, it might not be relevant to anything.

OK... will try to post up some pics........ I'm not much good with the photobucket business!!

The car is (at the moment) minus the offside front wing and front panel... the whole section which comprises the front valance. It will require welding on to the car which I can do quite readily, followed by securing the new front wing. Have no idea why they were removed in the first place..'Rust' ... I was told...but from the condition of the rest of the front and indeed the whole car, I wonder about that. The rust issue is minimal for a car of this age.

I wonder if the bracket could be part of the wing/front panel/bumper assembly.

Am trying to put the engine components back together and discovering what is not there that should be. Have had to source all the alternator brackets (Ebay is good for this) and now looking for the rear timing cover plate. What else I find is 'not there' will no doubt become clear just when I need the part!!
I want to get the engine, timing gear and associated wiring sorted before putting the panels on.... access to the engine is much easier as it sits at present.

Thanks for your interest.

That would be great, might be worth starting a project padge and dub rides thread to document your progress, a lot of people enjoy following these and often good to have them their to help on the way.   If you get stuck with the photobucket business, give me a shout.

I wonder too.  MK1's don't tend to rust here easily believe it not.  There are many other far more vulnerable area's.  Had a prang maybe? That's the only reason mine needed replacing. Might be a good idea to make sure the chassis legs are straight before you continue.

I wonder if the bracket could be part of the wing/front panel/bumper assembly.

I'm not sure about that.. I don't recognise it from there at all.

I take it you bought this car as an unfinshed project?

Hi.. again.. Yes, an unfinished project. Bought for spares (Ebay again!!) for not a lot of money and it was 50 miles from where I live. Just had to have it!!!!
I have an identical Mk1 Cabrio Clipper 1990 which I have been giving TLC for just over a year. I ran it last summer and it was great fun despite some annoying quirks - like the rev counter working fine then dying suddenly and then springing back to life. It had been lowered, but I've put the suspension back to factory height... the Cup Alloys have wider tyres and they (the tyres) were scuffing the wing arches when going over bumps. All sorted now. The car runs very well and is every bit as quick as my 1991 Mk2 Gti (run out model) which is hibernating at present. This too is a really nice example and needed a little tlc to get it back to really sound condition - lots of bits missing but now sorted.

So the car bought for spares was way too good to scrap/break so this is the current project. you are correct, I think it did have a bump hence the parts it came with - new wing and front panel. The chassis leg seems ok - I've measured it back to bulkhead and it's fine. It also lines up OK with the front panel.

Last June - around the 6th, I posted some pics and some questions about the best way to go about about installing this part to the car. Unfortunately, the pics have been moved or deleted.
I did get some helpful replies, and that's where I'm at just now.
M.
