Golf mk2 gti 16v temperature
« on: 15 February 2012, 18:42 »
Hello

My mk2 16v runs when up to temperature just over half way on the gauge. It does not go as far as three quarters and the fan does kick in if you are in traffic, but is it odd that it is as high as just over half way all the time? It wasn't as high before I changed the thermostat. Any helpful info or advice appreciated!

Perhaps your new thermostat is better.

Where did you get it from.

Just over halfway is fine, and the fan kicks in as per normal. Nothing to worry about.

What coolant have you got?

I used some ready mixed blue coolant. Would that make a difference to the temperature?

Coolant raises the boiling point of water, so having a very weak mix may cause the running temp to raise slightly.

You could always replace the temp sensors.

The coolant looked like pretty cheap stuff when the garage were putting it in. Thanks for this advice. Where would I get the sensors from? How much would they be?

Get your sensors from vwspares.co.uk as they're tried + tested. About 3quid each, replace all 3 on the side of the head and re-crimp new spade connectors all wires. You can swap the red/yellow guage sensor wire onto 1 of the other 2 to see if you have much of a difference between the 3. Or if you have a multimeter and can test the resistance across each one at various temps then try this and record the values. Halfway is about right though, and if that's its 'normal' position and oil temps are again 'normal' then you've possibly nothing to worry about

And use G12 ++ coolant after flushing the system.
