AGU vs ARZ vs AUM - which would you choose?
« on: 15 February 2012, 15:20 »
Time to pick the brains of all of you who've been there and done it.

My goal is to turn a 3 door turbo into a fast road/track car BUT it will also be styled, not a stripped out racer. Ideally I will be looking to get the power up, especially torque so which of these engines is likely to be the best starting point? And before anyone says it, I cant afford to go BAM yet, I'm looking at taking a standard car and modding it over time rather than throwing big bucks at it in 1 go. Does the earlier AGU with larger ports have much more benefit to it than the AUM or is there really nothing in it?

Now this might sound daft, but I might also want to fit cruise control and from what i've read, you cant do that on an AGU (cable throttle), whereas its a £100 retro fit on an AUM. 300 miles of autobahns to the Nurburgring leaves me with a dead leg most of the time so cruise would come in handy.

If anyone wants to tell me their experiences, what they did and what they would have done different then i'm all ears. PLEASE PLEASE remember tho, I'm never going to be able to afford an expensive conversion, it has to be a steady progression for me as I only have £50-300 a week on average to spend and i'm crap at saving!!

I have an ARZ and that has drive by wire so cruise control capable but I have had it mapped and I think it is down on torque compared to the others because it has the small turbo and small ports ( correct me if I'm wrong!). The ARZs are quite rare I believe?!

For modding engine id get AGU because the internals are stronger and the coil packs better and other parts more reliable imo.but like you say you cant retrofit cruise control.buy an AGU already with cruise control and put an AUM turbo (k03S) on it.

Ok, ignoring the cruise control and concentrating purely on power and potential would a 1998 AGU car be better than a 51 plate AUM? This is basically what i'm wondering

Aum but thats just because ive got one but if looking power agu with rods, its more basic engine being 1st 20vt. Run one of those with gt30 and meth inj awesome. Depends on how much power your looking if upto 300bhp any 20vt, if towards 400bhp and up agu with rods, pistons and big ass turbo.

400, in a fwd?

300 will be enough for me, dont want the hassle of meth, just a decent turbo and engine that wont blow apart.

What turbos will fit the standard manifold? Any recommendations apart from the 03s and 04?
