As you've said, your still on your probationary period, therefore you need to be prepared to take it on the chin (no pun intended) and maybe just tidy it up a little. You were gonna get your hair cut anyway, so that's fine, you obviously thought yourself it was getting a little long and unkept, but maybe just trim your goatee so it's all uniform. That way both of you kinda get what you want, and you both keep a modicum of respect and dignity.   I know it's not laid down in writing anywhere, but clean shaven always seems to be viewed as being more professional!   I know, I have to have a shave every bloody day in my line of work.

I am always getting picked up for my sideburns being too long, wearing 3/4 sleeves, beret looking alley...

All those who understand that sidies are supposed to be halfway up the ear, sleeves rolled above the elbow and beret brass over the left eye, as apposed to over the ear where mine resides..

Then again, being on tour with no rank, no badges and no boss has its privileges... Especially when the RSM starts balling at you and asks who you work for...

Take them to HR, racists fluffists.

Alternatively, they saw you talking 911's and thought you don't look middle aged enough

This. Life is full of compromises. Do you want to look middle aged and corporate, or young and a tad rebellious.

What your boss says isn't sh!t until he puts something in writing.

Just keep beard & hair short, and clean shave the other bits everyday.

You do look like a bit of an oik.

Thing is you're starting to get a bit jowly and senior looking.

You're just being groomed for upper-middle-management.

Enjoy it.

Look through John Lewis's menswear section - check out some of the models and maybe align yourself with some of their looks.  You'll go far with a few tweaks, young man.

Look up High Times in Middle Management by Doloroso, if you haven't heard it before.  You'll enjoy.

ha ha, and this.

Just get a look at the palm of his hand - it's your future that's in it. Then decide for yourself if you want to comply or not

i get grief if i dont have a wet shave every day, i work at an insurance brokers and am kind of front office. i does annoy me as i like a bit of stubble and shaving every day it a right pain in the arse! i can see their point of view but i dont agree with it, and i'm sure there is nothing they could do about it but i want to keep on their good side.

I would say that if you are in a Customer facing role (which you clearly are), then you really should be looking as good as possible. First impressions last, so I would make sure that your hair is neat and clean looking and you just keep a smart-ish goatee and wet shave the rest every day. No-one will pull you up on that. By the sound of things he is doing the "Big dog" thing and is giving you an idea of his perfect candidate. A small effort on your part could go a long way by the sounds of things.

Think about it this way - if you are called at short notice to visit a client (no time to shave) and they're a bit "Old School", you might not come across as well as you could. That might be the marginal difference between getting a big contract and not - something as small as that can make a massive impression on people.

I've always been a bit scruffy since I stopped doing customer facing work - I don't always shave now and apart from weddings and funerals I haven't worn a tie in 10 years so I am hardly one to judge; that said I did spend 12 years in various customer facing roles and appearance was absolutely paramount.

Oh, and b*ll**ks to him about your smoking - just don't do it before a meeting!

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

Get a haircut you bum!

So pleased i work in engineering,i dont think i could handle getting suited and booted everyday and being criticised for not having the correct knot in my tie!
In fact you get grief in most of the places i work if your not scruffy/covered in oil as it looks like youve not done bugger all

God bless manual labour/being on the tools.

I think you look fine to be quite honest though. :smug:

Snap, sod suits and shirts and sh!t, never have a shower in the morning and shave twice a week max
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...
