mpg from a 150

Hi i get between 400\450 miles from a tank and drive fairly steady with the odd heavy right foot !is this normal mpg , i would be intrested in what other cars are getting ? its done 131k and had full vw history till 100k, i servive it myself with all genuine parts, it had the camand follwers done around 10k ago with belt ect . ive heard storys of cleaning egr valve and manifold helping with mpg ? any tips appreciated ! Its a 2003 gti 150 6 speed

I'm seeing between 500-560 a tank, and getting 50-53mpg on a good motorway run, normally about 48-50 on a shorter journey. I cleaned out my manifold and wow...what a difference. Defo added some MPG and the car drove sooo much better. Clean it out!!

How difficult is the intake manifold to remove? And will it need new gasket?

normal town driving I tend to see 38-45 and on a motorway run I'll get 50 or so. I've cleaned out my EGR but I've not done the rest of the manifold yet.

An hour if your competent I guess...A new gasket wouldn't always be necessary, depends on condition of old one I guess, but for a few quid I'd get one from the dealer

biggest improvent i saw was changing exhaust

i'm getting 48mpg on the commute and saw 53 on a run to midlands

That was normal driving too - wasn't trying to get big numbers

wow the very best ive ever had was 480 driving down to newquay, think its time to whip the manifold off and have a look,  i would have thought the mechanic that did the new cam would have cleaned it when  doing the job but i will have to wait and see . we have a snap on diagnostic computer at work so maybe worth pluging that in as well as the codes were cleared 10k ish ago when the cam was sorted, so would be intresting to see if its thrown anything else up

Average at that time was 59.2 mpg sat at 70mph on the motorway with the cruise control activated

i can only dream of mileage like that, do you actually get that from the tank or is the computer a bit optimistic ?  I'm going to gine the inlet manifold a clean first thing in the morning , i went over to hull from manchster today and the average mpg on the trip thingy said around 40 on the way there and 35 on the way back, but ive always taken that with a pinch of salt ! the actual one can say 112mpg one min and 36 on the same stretch of road. My 2003 1.9 gti doesnt have the fuel countdown on the dash unfortunatly. but fingers crossed its gunked up tomorrow so i see a reasonable improvment. i hope it goes well as ive got to pick some standard 16" alloys up from huddersfield. my 18s with rubber band tyres are just to harsh a ride on the roads where i live
