High mileage cars with DSG..
« on: 30 January 2012, 18:09 »

Hi all,

Has anyone heard about people having problems with DSG fitted GTi's that are on 100k+ miles? The car has a full VW service history and was last serviced at 109k miles (115k on clock)

The car in question is pretty much fully loaded and for a shade over 5k - I think I might bag a little gem for little money.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

At certain mileages there is a scheduled DSG service (something like every 40,000 I believe) - make sure it has had these done - they should change the DSG oil too.

I've not heard of many failures due to high mileage but there was a faulty batch of mechatronic units which affected many 2007-2009 DSG VW cars.  These were replaced under warranty by VW, but it's worth checking yours is'nt one from this batch (VW should have the history of the warranty work if you ask them).  The problem made "start off" very jerky when the gearbox was fully warmed up and hot (it was a sticking solenoid or something that was worse when hot)

More info on this in this American press release,  where they actually had a recall (not here though !)

“Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VWGoA) today announced it would initiate a new customer service program to address concerns raised by its customers with certain Direct Shift Gearboxes (DSG(®)) in Volkswagen and Audi models, and to affirm its confidence in the sophisticated technology represented by those components.
This new comprehensive service program affects a limited number of model years 2007-2009 Volkswagens and Audis. Covered models are the Volkswagen R32, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, GTI, Eos, as well as Audi A3 and TT.

Some customers have reported transmission performance issues under certain driving conditions. This was due to a faulty component inside the Mechatronic unit within a limited production range. VWGoA will repair or replace the components in the transmissions of approximately 43,000 Volkswagens and 10,300 Audis at no charge to the vehicles' owners. Additionally, VWGoA will reimburse customers who have had this repaired at their own expense.”
