21k gti dilemma for noob

A great forum guys and full of good pointers.

Sorry, this may be a flogged to death topic but i am rearly after some advice as a noob.

okay, the car 2011 (june) GTI / DSG / highline etc (non leather) 10k miles
(30k list new) - mine for 21995 (before haggling starts)

Now, basically had an XC90 as the family plodder for 6 years and will keep this BUT wanna
try to make it more of a second car SO have to have something that can do alot of what
this does albeit on a smaller scale.

I went to test drive the GTI hoping to be put off so i would walk away (I did this with a focus ST 2 years ago)
BUT on driving it couldnt beleive how good it SEEMED to be. Even insurance price was good, and was hoping that would kill it for me  it didnt !

Anyway, to stop me typing my fingers off, can you firstly, try to put me off the purchase (any comments welcolmed)
and two confirm / answer a few questions:-

Can you confirm the road tax after the first year (is it £190 for a DSG ??) (salesman said it was £260 as it was a DSG, i think he got this wrong as agreed 1st year yes, but thereafter ??

Are tow bars able to be fitted ??

I do alot of 1-2 mile trips OR 10-12 mile trips and found in the past the 1-2 mile trips didnt allow a diesel to heat up enough to give its best fuel economy by a long mark, is the GTI real bad short start/stop journeys ??

any help / advice greatly appreciated fellas

I have just had a look on the Witter web site for tow bars. I put in the number plate of my Brother-in-laws car and it gave me results for a Mk6 Golf. Not specifically a GTI, so whilst in will fit, the rear diffuser may need trimming.

As for road tax, have a look on www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc and click on Vehicle Enquiry. Put in the reg number and the vehicle make and it will confirm the RFL amount and when it is due.

With fuel consumption, diesels are never going to be good on very short journeys. I would have thought there would be very little in terms of pence per mile costs between the XC90 and the GTI.

I do a lot of 2-4 mile trips through town and I get on average 22MPG!!!

A tow bar can be fitted to a GTI. I looked into getting it done just before the end of last year but ended up leaving it as our need disappeared.

As for road tax, it just cost me £188 for 12 months. £260 might be for the Edition 30 with the older engine but not the standard GTI.

To be honest, there's not a lot about the GTI to dislike over another car. Especially with the DSG, the GTI really can pull off just about any role.

I am just a bit nervous as this is kinda an impulse buy 

Goin to the dealers again tomoz for pricing a trade in. Mayb just a bit unsure as this
Is a bit of an impulse buy (20k buys a lot of second hand cars) but I suppose
A 7 month old car low miles is not exactly second hand in the real sense of the word.

I also suppose trying to compliment the xc90 so it can be more a second car is only
Goin to resort to something like this unless I want to spend loads more on something that
Costs loads more to run and own 

End of the day I am tight  and this is gona give me more than almost any car
About on this kinda budget I suppose

I had the dealer fit a Witter removable towbar.  It works very well - easy to fit and remove. You need a new diffuser panel, but when the bar's not fitted you can't spot the difference.

Oh - and it even gets 26+ mpg on the school run ...

thanks all for the replies, i did the deal today, collect tomorrow 

just couldnt resist, price and car just too good. £21k for 7 month old carbon grey GTI DSG/monzas etc 11k miles / rear led's
(just been serviced / next 2 services free) and a few little extras / 5 months tax / half full tank 

I know that theres a mk7 on the horizon somewhere and the ed35 maybe where the
values lie in 5 years time but it would cost me specced up 8-10k more, and R isnt
part of the line up for me (not at £38995 that one dealers selling at  )

My ethos is, keep for 2.5 years then trade to a mk7 (being lastish of the standard gti's with rear led's) it should stand
a reasonable trade then, oh sorry i am waffling on .....

At least it will share a home with my other VW (funnily enought known as the wafflebus  dont ask_

Congrat's on the purchase.... I'm sure you won't be disapointed and it will turn out to be a great impulse buy! 

Get some pictures up of the GTI when you get it.

I'm liking the wafflebus by the way. Looks like a bit of a labour of love?
