That annoying parcel shelf squeeky creak!

My last two gti's have had a really annoying squeeky creak that comes from the parcel shelf supports as soon as the car is moving so this weekend I decided I was gonna locate it fix it once and for all.
I removed the shelf supports and stuck some fabric tape along the outer edge of the supports where they bolt up to the bodywork and put a bit round the boot aperture where the rear of the support touches bodywork.
Voila........silence, no more annoying creaking squeeking to drive me mad.
Just thought I'd share that as I'm sure there are others being driven mad by the same noise.

If I could just get to the bottom of my creaking drivers seat now I'd be really happy!

take your top mount covers off as they rub against the shelf support. give everything a clean and tighten the screws that hold the back seat in place too.

its soo f**kin annoying

One other thing that used to cause an annoying squeak was the switch on the n/s parcel shelf support.
Also the rear seat latches can rattle/squeak which can be cured by winding some insulating tape around them to tighten them up . Bit of a bodge but it works.

(P.S. I Don't know if anyone remembers ,but this reminds me of an old Golf GTI MK2 ad with the bloke being driven mad by a squeak only to find it was his girlfriends earing  !? )

Heh heh yeah I remember that ad, he pulls up and has a redneck mechanic oil it while she is sleeping! Don't think that ad would quite hold up today what with all insulating tape etc that is required these days!!!

If you think its a pain having squeaks and rattles in your 15-20+ year old VWs .... Before the garage I worked for went VW / AUDI ( 1984 ) we were a AUSTIN / MORRIS  agent we had to spend ages on road tests with a sethescope trying to cure all the rattles and squeaks and that was only the  P.D.I. they weren't even registered !!
