Non Starting Golf

Hi folks, I'm a Newbie and just recently purchased a Mk3 Golf GTI.

Its an 8 valver and won't start.

It didn't have spark and after replacing the coil pack it now fires up and then dies straight away.

I guessed its the crank\flywheel position sensor and so I've bought a new one and started to put it in.

Trouble is (and now heres my question) I went to undo the hex bolt and its rounded itself off.

So are there any tips to getting the dam thing out?

I'm assuming I've got to take out the oil pump? is this necessary?

Any help would be appreciated, as this is turning into a nightmare!

I did do a search on the forum but I'm not good with the search thing and can't seem to find it!

No!  just the front engine mount.

does it have an engine immobiliser fitted?

shouldn't be tight - mole grips?

if you turn on the ignition without actually starting it can you hear the fuel pump start/prime ?.If not it might be a relay,number 30 is my favourite.

Isnt the fuel relay 167?

When you buy a Mk3 you need to get a U281 fault code reader
Worth the £20 many times over.

Sorry guys, I posted when half asleep!

Thanks for the replies so far though.

I should have added that the engine would only turn over previously, not fire up.

After finding the coil pack was knackered, that was swapped for a new one.

The car now turns over, fires up and dies.

I have had a good look through the forum and gone for the usual suspects, fuel, spark etc, etc.

But whilst running through the fault finder guide in the Mk3 section (very helpful  ) i checked the crank\flywheel sensor and found the insulation on the wires had become brittle and a couple of the wires were bare.

I went in for the kill and tried to swap it over.  What appears to be a half hour job is now being a right pain in the rear because of this stupid little bolt!

So after all my waffle!, what I'm trying to determine is, can you get to the bolt with mole grips or does the oil pump have to come off to gain access or is there a tried and tested method you guys have used, as just swearing at it doesn't seem to be working at the moment!

Do you mean the oil cooler?

if you need the room it can be taken off (messy) but try a whack and some std bolt removing techniques first

Ok a quick(ish) update.

So changed the Coil-pack, crank sensor, both relays numbers 30 and 167.

And still not bloody start!

It will crank fine, start and even rev once, but then just dies.

HOWEVER, when it dies you can hear the fuel relay click off.

So I'm putting this down to either alarm or immobiliser.

I don't have a keyfob for the alarm, but found the alarm is a dealer\aftermarket fit.  It has Volkswagen\Audi on the back of it and just SR (or possibly SA - which I'm assuming might be Scorpion Alarms?) and it sits behind the glovebox, its about 3 inches square and black, any ideas??.

But in my investigations, I found that the fuse for the alarm had blown.  I replaced this fuse and the indicators started flashing, indicating the alarm was active and working, but would the alarm isolate the fuel pump?

The way I see it, I have two options, try and find the maker of the alarm and see if I can get a keyfob or cut the old alarm out and reconnect everything.

As for the factory immobiliser, I read on the forum that if you unplug it, the car will run, but you'll have no immobiliser or keyfob central locking.

So I disconnected it and still nothing!  I am in the process of getting a key re-programmed so hope this helps.

And another quick question??

According to the wiring diagrams the fuel pump feed wire is red with a yellow chaser, but I tried to jump what I thought was the feed wire to the pump but it achieved nothing!

I admit to getting a bit confused with the wiring diagrams, so does anybody know the colour for the fuel pump feed?
