A lot of petrols are making diesel torque now.  Ive seen k03s pushing 285bhp on numerous rollers.  Mine ran 298lbft (403nm) on R-tech rollers.

Its all about the area under the graph if you ask me!

248bhp  278lbft R - Tech Powered 1.8T!!  - Gone but NOT forgotton

Mine is running 245lb/ft with nothing more than a remap, that's getting on for 100lb/ft more than a type-r!

In fairness CTR's are all bhp and no torque, the vtec has never been known for it's proper muscle.  They're wiley little cars though, massive big go-karts!

Mine's an AGU, re-mapped, air filter, and putting out 235lb/ft torque!

My VR beats Type R's all day long as soon as theres a little bit of an up hill gradient, the torque figures are sh!te on the Type R's
The 2nd Gens (around 2002) are 200 BHP but only 145ft/ib
The 3rd Gens (2005 on) are 198bhp and only 142ft/lb
Dom's GTI T would eat most Type R's all day long, and standard GTI T's wont be far behind

Hence why the CTR pips most things off the line, then gets creamed once you've got into second gear.
