Its not only problems that affect the first batch... they always add like nice things once the initial rush slows down. e.g Led rears, colour mfd... just the little changes.

It's nice to be one of the first with a new model though.

I still remember the stares and comments I got when mine was the only Mk6 GTI in town.

It can be good for the looks, but I agree after ordering my MK5 on release day and receiving it first. They made a fair few changes most annoying was they added the steering wheel buttons. It made me wait to see what updates were getting.

On the build front though I would not say the MK5 was any worse for rattles etc.
On Order - Mk 8.5 Clubsport Pure White, Queenstown, DCC.
MK 7.5 R Pure White, Pretoria Silver, DCC, Rear Camera.
Gone - MK 7 GTI Carbon Grey, Rear Camera, Service Pack.
Gone - MK 6 GTI  Reflex Silver, Monza Shadows, RCD 510, Rear Camera, Bluetooth, Tyre Pressure Sensor, Xenons Convenience pack, Service Pack :)
Gone - MK 5 GTI Reflex Silver, Monza II 18's, Luxury Pack, Mulitchanger

MY Mk6 must have been one of the first. I picked it up September 2009 after it had been a showroom model for at least 2 months. I remember what it was like being one of the few on this forum actually in possession of the car. Back then the Mk6 was like a mythological creature that people had only seen shadows and heard whispers of.

Now every punter has one

But with regards to holding off for updates, there's always going to be something newer. And besides, because I didn't hold off for updates, I paid significantly less than GTI's cost now. To buy a car now with my spec on it would be an extra £4,000 - I'm not bothered about missing out on a colour MFD or LED's.

I got mine on the 3rd September.... took 3 months before anyone even knew what a mk6 was, and that it looked different from the mk5

Most of my mates thought it was just a body kit
