troubleshooting help (electrical?)
« on: 21 January 2012, 16:57 »
Hello all...

mk2 ownership is just how i rememebered it to be

so i need to consult the internet for help.

Car is a H plate gti.

went out in the car on friday morning everything to my knowledge worked. (everything had previously)
at lunchtime im leaving work and i remember the indicators working.
I flashed someone out of a junction on my way home and i thought my high beam flashers weren't working because the blue light didnt appear on the dash. (i now understand the blue light only comes on on the dash when the headlights are switched on - is this correct?) Im not sure if this is the cause of the following issues, however this is a potential conclusion i have come to.

following this I've identified the following issues;
• indicators no longer work, there is no green light on the dash at all.
• My hazard lights do not work, but the green dash light stays on.
• Blower switch does not work so the blowers do not turn on.
• wipers no longer work on any cycle and neither does the water.

the following do still work
• cigarette lighter
• high beam flashers from the stalk.
• dash clocks still work and so does the MFA.

I have changed the fuse for the indicators (17) and checked the fuse for the blowers (6) and these seem ok.
I've found conflicting information with regard to what the relays do on what i understand is the CE2 fusebox.

I was given the following diagram for the CE2 fusebox and I can't see which relay may have affected these issues.
or would i need to potentially replace multiple relays?

(seems this is by our very own rubjonny too? )

Could this be an earth somewhere?

please help!

This happened to me after a particularly damp period.

Take the relays / fuses out one by one.  Check for dampness, then replace.  process of elimination.

Could also be that your wiper stalk assembly is fubard.

the blue dash light will always flash regardless of lights on and off.You could also check earths and also maybe worth checking the switch on the back of the ignition as they can sometimes cause problems.

hsilly question, how do you check for dampness? will i be able to see it on the fuses and relays, or is it something that can be felt, as its very cold outside! hmmmmm... bloody car!

Do you have one of "those" Mk2's that don't let in any water/condensation?

As you know common fault for water ingress is via the accelerator cable and bonnet release cable. Both of which route behind the fuse box.

So if your rug is damp chances are your box needs an airing.

Thanks TME, i just needed clarification.
Hey clipper jay! im thinking wiper stalk/indicator stalk could be messed up too, however highbeam flashers work on the stalk, but the indicators don't. process of elimination begins!

checked ALL fuses and all ok, then the indicators worked, then hazards worked, then only right indicator worked, then nothing works again...

cut all my fingertips so i gave up for now.
Grrrrrr

Relays next, although it's looking increasingly like i'll have to take the steering column covers off and have a clean up under there, think if i check each connection (many!) and make sure they're clean, clean off any crap, add a touch of vaseline and put them back together again....

no enthusiasm for today... maybe next saturday!
