Idling too high
« on: 21 January 2012, 16:45 »
Just cleaned out the isv due to the idle being all over the place, started it up and ran perfectly. Thought I'd also clean out the dizzy cap points and rotor arm with wet n dry because they were a bit manky, since putting it back together it's idling at about 1900 rpm! Even after adjusting the idle all the way down. Think I may have put the ht leads back on in the wrong order first time round also...... :undecided:
Help much appreciated
It's a 1988 8v gti...

Which blue temperature switch? Bit of a noob.....
I'm assuming the isv works ok, it was running fine after I put it back together.

Edit: just found out, I'll give that a go! Cheers

Ok, followed instructions here
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=216745.0

Disconnected the ECT and revved the engine, plugged it back in and the revs dropped down to about 1100rpm.
With it out it revs at about 850.
Does that mean it needs replacing, or point to something else?

Cheers

what about the microswitch at the back of the throttle body... do a search on here about it - seems to be a common issue..

Read another thread talking about the throttle stop idle switch....
Fiddled with the throttle a little, could hear a click as it touched the throttle stop (I'm assuming the switch to tell the engine to start idling).
Fired it up and.......

Ran fine! Or at least as well as it did before.

Seems a little odd. Sure there is a problem somewhere as there was a little pool of oily stuff in the throttle body inlet. Crankcase ventilation?
Bit beyond my limited expertise I think looking at other threads. Better get on the blower to the mechanic!
Thanks for the advice.
